Empower Energies installed a Supplemental Solar Array Designed to Help Power the GM e-Motor Building.

FREDERICK, MD – May 18, 2015 – Empower Energies, a leading Clean Energy Portfolio Solutions company, announced the completion of a 580 kilowatt (PV) addition to the solar array at the General Motors Baltimore Operations facility in White Marsh, MD. This sustainable manufacturing campus already featured a 1.23 MW rooftop solar array. The new system will add approximately 2,420 five-by-three foot solar panels, covering 87 percent of the roof area of the GM eMotor building.

“This addition brings our Baltimore Operations facility to a total of 1.81MW, the largest solar array in Baltimore County,” said Rob Threlkeld, GM manager of renewable energy. “As the leading automotive user of solar power, we understand the importance of solar projects like this to help us reduce our impact on the environment.”

Empower Energies completed the intricate installation process with Union Electric Company serving as general contractor and electrical partner, and ARC Construction Services, Inc. providing construction services. Union Electric completed the wiring of the system, testing, and commissioning. ARC installed the racking system and the solar panels. Applied Energy Technologies (AET), a solar racking company that also has roots in the automotive industry, was selected to provide the roof ballast mounting system for the project. The array can withstand extreme weather conditions and wind speed up to 80 mph. The complete system will produce approximately 757megawatt hours of electricity per year.

"GM’s renewable energy initiatives lead the automotive industry," said Len Jornlin, Empower Energies CEO. “We’re pleased to be able to work with them, this time at their Baltimore Operations facility, to help deliver on their commitment. And we look forward to working with GM to help provide the right mix of renewable energy and energy optimization projects to meet their business and sustainability objectives in the near future.”

Baltimore Operations achieved the voluntary U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® Challenge for Industry by reducing energy intensity throughout the facility by 15.5 percent in just three years. The U.S. Green Business Council also recently certified the e-Motor building as LEED Silver. The new solar array helped the e-Motor building earn the certification.
